If tracing isn't an option - or you really feel that it is cheating (I don't think it is) then using a grid to copy your image may be just the thing. The added bonus of using a grid as a drawing aid, is that you must judge relative distances and reproduce them, so it will help your overall drawing skills by training visual memory. Just follow these easy steps!

I must admit, I didn't use grid drawing as a tool to help me learn to draw. My sister kindly made a grid for me, on a transparency, but for a long time, I didn't get around to trying it out. So, I've been experimenting drawing with grids since I wanted to write about it as an optional drawing tool.

When sizing-up from a sketch you can lightly draw a grid of regular lines on the drawing itself or (as with photographs) you can use a suitable, fine pen to draw your grid on an acetate sheet. The acetate method is preferable as you have a permanent, ready-to-hand grid for all occasions. The smaller you make your squares the more accurate your copy will be. I found that a grid of ½-inch (1cm) squares was quite adequate for a 6"×4" photograph.

For this demonstration I will be using a grid to draw a picture of a puppy on a birthday card for my nephew. Do not pay for those expensive grid drawing tutorials when you can learn the same technique on your own for free. I first learned how to use a grid for drawing in a high school geometry project where we had to enlarge a cartoon.
