7 Advanced Drawing Tips for Creating Photo-Realistic Drawings in Pencil and Graphite

Drawing Hair and Fur - an Introduction : Graphite Pencil Techniques

Drawing Hair - an Introduction : Graphite Pencil Techniques

I cannot stress this too much or too often — Pencils do not draw hairs. Pencil marks only define the position and shape of hairs. Well, that may be a little too simplistic - there will be occasions when a dark hair overlays a patch of white hair and requires a positive pencil stroke. And pencils certainly add the required tonal values to hairs. But in general use a pencil line does not represent a hair — it forms the boundary between hairs.

I hope you will find the following images and descriptions informative and helpful as a guide in drawing noses. Many thanks to Toni-Marie Hudson for the use of her picture as reference for this tutorial.

Graphite Pencil Drawing Tutorial: Female Eye by Faith Te

The following is a step-by-step demonstration of how I draw eyes. While I very much hope that it helps you in drawing realistic eyes, do experiment and develop your own way of drawing. I myself sometimes do not follow some of the steps exactly as I like to experiment and try to find better ways of achieving a specific texture or effect. Before I begin, many thanks to Toni-Marie Hudson for the use of her picture. Toni-Marie does animal paintings in mixed media. Visit her web site to view her extremely realistic paintings.

    Photorealism: Very Close Up

    Photorealism: Very Close Up

Artists can take their skills beyond simply outlining and filling in values, by learning how to draw without lines. In the real world, very few objects have actual lines defining their forms. Rather, contrasting values identify the edges of the object’s parts according to the lights and darks created by the dominant light source

    Photorealist Techniques and Methods

    Photorealist Techniques and Methods

Photorealist painting is marked by thorough attention to detail, in which the artist strives to accurately reproduce every detail in the photo onto the canvas. The completed artworks are usually air-brushed or handpainted in acrylics or oils. Before embarking on a large-scale painting, photorealist artists often create small studies in colored pencils or watercolors, which are generally impressive artworks in their own right.

    Realistic Pencil Portrait

    Realistic Pencil Portrait

There isn't really much of a "secret" to drawing in this style. I was first introduced to this technique by one of my teachers, L.A. Times illustrator, Richard Milholland. He explained it very simply—you just get a sharp pencil, smooth Bristol board, and draw in the itty-bitty details. His own work was known for its scary photo-realistic detail, so I was a little amazed that this was all that there was to it! But that was it!

The Three Principles of Great Three-Dimensional Drawings

The Three Principles of Great Three-Dimensional Drawings

Even experienced artists sometimes struggle with creating realistic three-dimensional drawings. Of course they know the basic principles and can create naturalistic drawings by heart. But sometimes even the most skilled discover in their work some parts that look distorted and not natural.

How to Make Your Drawings Realistic - Learning how to make your art more realistic may be easier than you think. The first thing you do, is to begin to see objects in this world as simple shapes. About 80 percent of art is thinking and seeing things like an artist. The other 20 percent is technical skill. There are a handful of basic shapes. These are, circle, square, rectangle, and triangle. As you look at the screen of your computer monitor to read this article, you can boil down the computer monitor as a square.

The Secrets of Realistic Drawings - There are enough styles of drawing, modern, surrealism. But the most pure of all art is the reproduction of realistic likeness. What does this mean to you? Realism is the reproduction of something that is the same likeness of what you see; what is real.
