Drawing with colored pencils is dramatically different than drawing with graphite pencils, in several ways. In this tutorial, I will introduce and discuss some general concepts, tips, and techniques you'll need to learn in order to work well with colored pencils.

Flat color, as in painting, is redefined by the blending of other hues with it. With colored pencil, Layering accomplishes transparent tones when lightly overlapped, or opacity with heavy pressure. It is a process of "stacking up" one hue over another to achieve the wonderful hue laden mixtures for which they are known.

Colored pencils are a dry medium and it's always easier to mix two or three colors that come close to the exact hue (color) and value (how light or dark) you want than to try to mix it with colors that are very far apart from either. It's also easier to get a smooth gradient.
