This tutorial explains how some of the images in Dragon Shadows were colored with markers. The way that I color with markers is to lay down flat colors and keep blending to a minimum. There are other methods out there that will give you a completely different look with the same exact materials.

I have created this tutorial for you after having received many questions on how I color. One technique which is very fun and easy to do is to combine mediums; using copic markers and prismacolor pencils together. The only rule is this: Always use your copic markers first and then add your prismacolor pencils. If you do the reverse you will ruin your copic markers and they are just to costly to have to replace!

My first question after I saw someone demonstrate how to blend Copic markers was: “What is the blending marker for then?” I got my answer and then played, researched, and discovered a little more.
There are four types of Copic markers available: Copic, Sketch, Ciao, and Wide. There are key differences between these markers that you should know.
I have created this tutorial for coloring with Copic Makers because I get a lot of questions regarding how I color with these markers. I am not a certified instructor and I have never taken a course. This Anime / Manga Illustration was done entirely in Prismacolor. So anyways for this tutorial I decided to use the cover to the Tenjho Tenge manga vol. 8 because it was a fairly easy pic to color and you could have something to compare the differences between markers and digital coloring.

Firstly, Light never hits a surface evenly, even a flat one. There are always inconsistencies and deviations in how a surface is lit. Secondly, filing in every bit of white space is nigh unto painting the object and less like a quicker sketch render. Leaving some white while having quick and confident strokes with a marker lends itself to having an exciting and interesting sketch render. A cube, though simple in form, can have excitement added to it with some wonderful marker application.
