How to Train Your Dragon is a great cartoon movie about Vikings fighting and killing dragons….until one of the kind-hearted Vikings learns to love one of the dragons, Toothless (a Night Fury dragon). I have put together an easy step by step drawing tutorial that builds up Toothless’ form with simple shapes. Find the easy Toothless, the Night Fury drawing lesson & instructions below. Good luck.
How to Draw Toothless Night Fury Dragon from How to Train Your Dragon
Start off the drawing by lightly sketching the basic shapes that make up Toothless’ face … an oval with a smaller oval at the bottom. The find the center vertically and horizontally, as pictured above.
Now draw the outside shape that both of those 2 ovals form. The top of the mouth is at the center horizontal line, as seen above. Draw 2 downward slanted lines for the dragon’s nostrils.
Draw the top of the nose with 2 inwards curved lines. Start drawing the eyes as well b drawing outwards curved lines. Also draw a letter ‘u’ like shape for the iris of the eye. Draw both ears by drawing a letter ‘c’ for the left ear and a backwards letter ‘c’ for the right ear. Draw a letter ‘m’ like shape at the top of the head…also draw a bunch of upside down letter ‘u’s along the vertical guideline at the top of the head.
Draw the bottom of the mouth with a half circle shape. Draw the bottom of the eye with a sideways letter ‘c’ like shape. Draw a small oval for the highlight of the eye.
Draw a curved line under each eye. Lightly sketch a smaller mouth shape inside the mouth — this will be the gums. Lightly sketch the ear shapes as well.
Now draw the ears darker, but on the inside of the ears make a squiggly line. Draw the teeth by drawing circle-like shapes along the bottom row and more triangle-like shapes up at the top of the mouth.
Now draw the gums behind the teeth by re-tracing the line that you drew in step #5. Also draw a letter ‘w’ like shape for the tongue.
Now lightly sketch the basic shapes that make up the form of the dragon…with oval like shapes, as pictured above.
Now you can go ahead and draw the arms by using the outline that you drew in the previous step to help you draw it. Each hand is a circle-ovalish like shape. Draw the claws as letter ‘v’ like shapes (closed with a curved line).
Now draw the right leg by using the outline as a guide. Draw claws again.
Draw the left leg. Draw a backwards number ‘7’ shape for the inside of the leg. Draw claws too.
Draw the tail of the dragon by tracing the outline.
Draw a letter ‘v’ like shape to the right of the dragon’s ear. Draw a letter ‘L’ like shape under the left arm. Draw a backwards letter ‘L’ under the right arm. Draw squiggly lines at the back of the tail as well as a zig-zag shape at the very end.
Draw a capital letter ‘T’ like shape in the tail. Draw the tail’s wings as well. You can see a number ‘7’ like shape and a backwards number ‘7’ like shape, with an upside down letter ‘v’ like shape for the left wing. For the right wing you can see a number ‘y’ shape, connected to a letter ‘u’ like shape.
Lightly sketch a triangle on either side of Toothless…the one on the right is much larger and upside down.
Now use the triangle that you drew in step #15 to guide you to draw the right wing.
Again, use the triangle that you drew in step #15 to guide you through drawing the left wing.
Step 18 – Finished Black and White Drawing of Toothless, Night Fury Dragon from How to Train Your Dragon Movie
Now finish up the dragon by darkening the right lines and erasing the lines that you don’t need anymore.
