Guide to Drawing Cats & Kittens with Step by Step Instructional Tutorial / Lesson

A cat has very much the same framework as a dog, but its back is usally longer. Look at the proportions of your cat and think about the size of its head, the length of its neck, the difference between front and back legs, etc. When you begin to sketch, don’t forget to draw the simple shapes very lightly – they are only put in to help you!

Step 1

Start drawing (very lightly) the cat by drawing its skeletonized shape (stick figure. You can draw the base of the body as an oval, the head as a circle, triangles for the ears, and stick-like limbs.

Step 2

Now add some mass / form to the stick figure cat. Notice that the leg / thigh is now an oval…and the chest is now an oval too. We also drew a circle within the face.

Step 3

Now we will add in more of the details…such as some of the fur lines. some of the toe features. The eyes are like sharper ovals. The mouth is like a sideways number ‘3’.

Step 4 – Finish up the Cat Drawing

Every cat / kitten has his or her own unique features. Many cats have stripes, like the one above. Don’t forget whiskers…draw them as thinly as possible.

Step 1

First, lightly sketch a rectangle with the following lines in it.

The lines help you place the cat’s facial features properly.

Step 3

Now let the rectangle help you draw the face shape of the cat.

Step 4

Don’t forget your cat’s whiskers – draw them last, with quick strokes, starting at the base, not the tip. Of course you must try to draw your own pets from life!
