Drawing in Pen and Ink and How to Handle Your Pen Correctly

Drawing in Pen and Ink and How to Handle Your Pen Correctly

Now comes the time for starting the first actual work in pen drawing; work of the very simplest sort, designed to give one an acquaintance with his instruments and to provide for him a logical starting point from which to advance gradually and consistently, as broader perception and increased manual dexterity are gained.

Drawing in Pen and Ink : Techniques for Pen Drawing

The technique of the pen is vastly different from that of any other tool the artists use, and the work done with a pen is consequently very unique. By nature it is a much harsher and a less flexible instrument than either the pencil or the brush, even though pens have come a long way. A pen drawing has a distinct individuality, no matter what kind of a technique is used, fundamentally because of the manner of getting the various tones and shadows, which is different from that in the other mediums generally used.

Beginners are sometimes afraid to draw with pen and ink because ink lines seem so definite and permanent. Once you realize that you can erase ink lines just as you can erase pencil lines, you will draw with more courage.

As a rule it is customary for the beginner to work in tones, or masses, because they are approximately nearer to what he sees than a line effect would be. Learn some really neat pen and ink techniques with the following article.

    Splatter of Ink Effects

    Splatter of Ink Effects

A very effective background may be made by intro. ducing spatter work, the treatment of which I will describe, viz : First outline your drawing with ink, allow it to dry, then cover with paper the parts you wish to protect, and leave the parts to be spattered exposed. Use a clean tooth-brush. Swab a little ink into the bristles, then shove the brush across a stick or case knife.

In this very rough example, scribbly broken line, suggests the verticals and horizontals of stonework. The trick is not to make any lines too long and to draw corner areas. Concentrate texture in dark areas and use more detail in the foreground. Variations in the ink wash can also be used to suggest variations in tonal value between areas of brick and stone.

You can draw with any kind of pen: ball point, roller ball, or even felt tip. Even fine point Sharpies make wonderful, very black lines. Try out your favorite pens in your sketchbook, then move on to paper. Shading is accomplished with lines, cross hatching or washes (see Brush and Ink below).

It may be an irrational fear as the internet has also brought to light amazing factions of creators in different pockets of the globe.

n this demo, I block in the shapes of the wolf with pencil then switch to pen and ink. If you have trouble with the anatomy of the gray wolf, try to spend some time with its domesticated cousin, the dog. Obviously a husky will look more wolf-like than a poodle, but even the latter can help you put together the pieces of the anatomy puzzle. Make some quick sketches of the dog in a similar pose, then refer to them when you return to the drawing.

This week we begin to explore pen and ink - begin being the operative word. Needless to say, this is a very broad subject that could never be adequately covered in a single lesson, but we will cover enough in this installment to give you something to work with as you familiarize yourself with the medium. Pen and Ink Hatching, Crosshatching and Scumbling : Basic Pen Strokes for Ink Drawing

We usually think of ink drawing in terms of line, because of the solid black line created with pen-and-ink, we imagine that we can't create tonal value. While this might be, strictly speaking, true - there are many ways that we can create the illusion of value.

    Pen & Ink Drawing Technique

    Pen & Ink Drawing Technique

Pen and ink drawing dates back to the ninth century, according to Bamber Gascoigne, author of Historyworld.net. It really became popular in the 14th century with the development of paper, something ordinary people could afford to use. Technology today has made it easier for people to learn with the availability of pre-filled pens with varying point sizes and colors. The techniques are not difficult, but do require some art skills, especially for realistic drawings. Cartooning requires somewhat less skill using the same techniques, because realism is not as important..

However after stating that, pen & ink drawing can be very rewarding. You will be able to create a range of work from photo-realism to total abstraction and everything else in between. As we grow and add lessons we will do some wax relief projects and other interesting experimentation into the medium that will show the versatility of pen & ink as an artist media.

Sketching with Pen, Ink and Wash

Drawing with ink pens, often done very precisely, can work well with a more relaxed approach, especially if you use a nib pen which can be a little unpredictable. I've chosen an untidy country lane as my subject for these examples - foliage is a great subject for practice in informality, as it will soon drive you crazy if you get too detailed!

    Sketching with Pen and Ink

Drawing Cars : Easy With Pen and Ink - Cars drawn with ink are very dramatic, but also easy to render. Pen and ink sketches offer extreme resistance to smudging, or bleeding. If the "stippling" technique is used, it is almost impossible to screw up a drawing.

Pen-and-Ink Drawing Techniques : Drawing Techniques for Pen and Ink - Pen and Ink drawing techniques are very similar to those used in pencil drawing, but they will yield a stronger sense of value with the contrasting black on white; that is assuming you are using black ink on white paper.

Pen and Ink Drawing Techniques - Pen and ink drawing describes the process of using pens to apply ink to a surface. There is an endless amount of pen and ink techniques. On this page, we will cover the basics of pen and ink drawing techniques, tools, and materials. Some of the materials you may need to create an ink drawing include ink, drawing pens, various nibs, graphite pencil, eraser, paper towel, a paint brush, and a drawing surface.
