Creating Tangible, Touchable Hair Drawing Tutorial
Hair is the crowning glory. I don't care how knock my socks off the rest of your picture is. If you draw a woman, and if everything on that woman is perfect (breathtaking costume design, marvelous intricacy, perfect anatomy, beautiful eyes)......but her hair looks like a bird's nest, the picture loses its impact. Hair is a must learn if you want to improve your work.
Drawing hair is hard work. It's complicated, time consuming, and often the results are terrible, and trust me, I speak from personal experience when I say that. So, why bother? I used to skip it all together when drawing portraits, thinking I'd never be able to do it well, so I didn't do it at all. In this section, I'll be explaining how to end straight hair. If you'd like to know how to draw straight hair, read the Hair Basics tutorial. Lined up above are four drawing examples of how straight hair usually ends. The first is straight-lined. This is the kind that ends on a straight, clean line. All you need to do is draw a line at the end of the hair as shown in the close up at teh bottom. The second type of straight hair ending is pointed. Pointed end just are that - pointed. They are pretty much "V" shaped and are usually curved.
A very important thing I've learned in drawing is that the only way to do something well is to know it well. In fact, if you can't draw something completely from your mind, it means you don't know that something good enough. Can you draw hair completely from your mind? If you can't, that just means you don't really know what hair looks like. There's a simple solution. Study it.
One of the most common mistakes is to attempt to draw every hair as a pencil-stroke. A single pencil line cannot represent the many changes of tone along the shaft of hair, so this approach is invariably disastrous. Another problem is lack of care - you should spend at least as much time on the hair as on the face.

Depending on the style, anime hair can be very complex. However, if you break it down into its basic components, the process of drawing anime hair becomes a little simpler. Like real hair, anime hair is composed of many strands. However, rather than drawing each individual strand, the hair is often drawn in various sized/shaped clumps, as shown here. These are some of the simplest forms of each hair style. Notice that in most cases, the outline is more curvy on the bottom of the hair clump. This is especially apparent on the top leftmost example; the lower line is curvier than the top line, giving the hair more depth and more of that anime-ish look. Sometimes this is highly exaggerated, and other times it is hardly noticable, but for most anime hair styles, each individual strand of hair will have this basic shape.
